The Mysteries of Our Lord

Joy

The joyful mysteries invite us to walk with Mary as she's chosen to bear Christ into the world, seeking to serve rather than be served, persevering through difficult trials and accepting heavy burdens along the way.  On this journey with Mary and the Holy Family, we come to know the incredible joy in simply saying yes to God's will, even when we are faced with suffering because of it.  The joyful mysteries are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays.

Light

The luminous mysteries embark us on the most incredible journey in history, with Christ as the light leading our footsteps.  We are invited to the most exquisite vocation, to be His disciple and co-builder of His kingdom here on earth.  By partaking in the sacraments He instituted for His Church, we unite ourselves wholly to Christ's body as individual members of it, and by His grace we are called to serve Him in charity.  The luminous mysteries are traditionally prayed on Thursdays.

Sorrow

The sorrowful mysteries draw us near to Christ in the immense suffering He endured all the way until His death on the cross to defeat the sins of mankind for the sake of our salvation.  By contemplating the passion of Christ, these mysteries can facilitate a profound hatred for our sin, demonstrating the great weight they hold, all of which rested upon Christ's shoulders, simply out of love for His people.  If you ever doubt how much Christ truly loves you, remember that if you were the only sinner, He would have died just for you.  The sorrowful mysteries are traditionally prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Glory

The glorious mysteries allow us to recollect the great triumph of Christ's resurrection over sin and death and the salvation that it brought to those who live in Him.  This great fundamental truth gives us the courage to be the apostles Christ calls us to be,  We are reminded that only by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit which He gives to us, we can accomplish His will, and only by doing so we will be fulfilled.  We are granted hope in eternal life with God in heaven, but only because Christ paved the way for us.  The glorious mysteries are traditionally prayed on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

our father (Lord's prayer)

our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses.  as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

hail Mary

hail Mary, full of grace, the lord is with thee.  blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

glory be

glory be to the father, to the son, and to the holy spirit

as it was in the beginning, is now, and forever shall be, world without end.

Amen.

Fatima prayer

oh my Jesus,

forgive us our sins, and save us from the fires of hell.  Lead all souls into Heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.

Amen.

hail, holy queen

hail, holy queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.  To thee do we cry, poor banished children of eve.  To thee, do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.  Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O Clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary,

pray for us, Most Holy Mother of God,

that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Amen.

closing prayer

let us pray,

oh God, whose only-begotten Son, through His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life.  Grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

Holy Rosary history

As early as the 200s (AD), the Desert Fathers, who were Christian monastics living in Egypt used physical stones to help stay on track while reciting the 150 Psalms from the Bible.

By the 300s (AD), Desert Father St. Anthony the Great developed the practice of using prayer ropes as a simple means to keep track of prayers during the recitation of the psalter.

St. Anthony the Great (pictured left), who died in 356 AD is revered as the father of Christian Monasticism St. Pachomious (pictured right) was also a desert father, who died in 347 AD, and was also known for using prayer ropes.

Still commonly used today in the Eastern tradition, prayer ropes or as they're most notably referred to as, chotki, served as the first predecessor for what would eventually be the Rosary.

Early Marian Devotion

The Sub Tuum Praesidium is the earliest Marian prayer, with its composition dating back to 250 AD in Egypt.

Primitive versions of the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) and Marian devotion in general can be traced back to the 300s (AD) in its usage in the Liturgy of St. James, which is a form of liturgy still practiced by many Eastern Christians to this day.

 â€‹

In 341 AD, we see the composition of the Apostles Creed as we have it today., including the line saying "born of the Virgin Mary".

In the early 600s (AD), Pope St. Gregory the Great popularized an early version of the Ave Maria by asking it to be prayed on the fourth Sunday of Advent.

Fragment of the Sub Tuum Praesidium from 250 AD in Egypt demonstrates the practice of Marian devotion within the early church.

Pope St. Gregory the Great reigned from 590 AD to 604 AD.  He is well-known for developing a style of chant music, which today is referred to as Gregorian chant.
